Garnishments are stopped immediately by the filing of a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. This is also called the "Automatic Stay Order" which orders the collectors to stop the garnishment and any funds garnished after the filing of the Chapter 7 Bankruptcy have to be returned to the garnishee.

Lawsuits are stopped immediately by the filing of a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and in the case of a discharge the creditor is not allowed to collect the debt from the debtor. This is called the "Automatic Stay Order" which the Federal Bankruptcy Court issues to the Federal, State or City Court where the lawsuit is pending.
